Wait

In high school, someone told me to wait -
That in two short years, the tides would change.
"Cool kids" would be nobodies, drug dealers, criminals.
Trading parties for textbooks would earn more than a sneer.
Teasing endured for budding uniqueness would build character.
It seemed worthless at the time, and I hated the imbalance.
I felt myself slipping, waiting vainly for exhilaration,
Doubting the world could revolve on such a tilt.
But now, I find, that somebody was right.
